The SAG 2012 Red Carpet Best Dressed

The SAG's red carpet was not very impressive, but there were five starlets that I thought looked great from head to toe. I'm hoping the stars will wear more couture for the Oscars.

I absolutely love this campaign that features the Missoni family, Mariacarla Boscono, and Pedro Almodóvar. It's fresh, different, eclectic, and captures the essence of the collection beautifully.

This campaign came very close to first, it embodies the collection and portrays the urban warrior that the Balenciaga woman became this season.

Lanvin

Aymeline Valade. Enough Said. In all honesty though, it's the perfect portrayal of dark and vampy yet romantic at the same time.

The clothes are phenomenal, my favorite collection in years - the photos are stunning and Gisele Bunchen is out of this world.

Holy Balmain

The Balmain girl has grown up, gone to rehab, cleaned up her image, and got a dose of class. I have always been a fan of Decarnin's work dont get me wrong, but what Rousteing did here can only be described as magical. Just as with the menswear, Rousteing has managed to keep the essence of Decarnin in the collection but still added his own vision of refinment.

Floral Delight: Valentino Spring 2012 Couture

Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiori's latest collection for Valentino is very pretty. The dresses with the floral prints reminded me of English wallpaper, but in a good way. Craftsmanship is impeccable, especially the cut out lace on the sheer tops. Hopefully some Oscar nominee takes note of these amazing dresses.

Giambattista Valli's latest collection confirms that the designer is definitely capable of making couture clothing. His collection is a breath of fresh air in comparison to the other shows, especially the disappointing highly anticipated Atelier Versace show. Valli's play with texture and shape is quite impressive, and I love how he played with the peplum shape that is very popular for spring-summer 2012. His use of lace just reaffirms the glamour and femininity that is synonymous with his brand.

It's that time of the year again where it's all too hectic with womenswear pre-fall 12 and menswear FW12 - let the games begin!
Before I even begin to venture into womenswear pre-fall, I have to pay my respects to the menswear as it has been a while.

Acne

Refined yet not so refined, marches to his own beat yet sticks to silhouettes that are a bit mainstream and safe. What I really like about what Jonny Johansson did here is that he created a collection catered to the fashionable yet not so extreme, he fills this niche very well and executes it perfectly. Notice the cut and hem of the pants, the white socks and the guts to wear color - what's not to love here!

Agnès B.

What we have here is an array of formal wear that pretty much caters to anyone whether you work on Wall Street, your father's company, a designer, managing a band or even if you're a rock star yourself - every ensemble here is just as mouth watering as the next one.

Alexander McQueen

Any formal or black tie events headed your way soon? Look no further - not only will you be the main attraction at the event, you will be the talk of the town for your bold choice in attire. I'd like to have either draped on my arm at a wedding I will be attending in Colombia in March (although I do prefer to have the second look).

Ami

It's pretty hard not to notice and ogle at a man walking past you sporting any of these looks. He's rugged, confident enough to sport a little flair and always gets his way. Alexandre Mattiusi did a fantastic job with this collection that I believe it will have an immense retail appeal since it really caters to a broad audience.

Balmain

I have always been a fan of Balmain - the ruggedness and the non-chalant approach to dressing so I appreciate that Rousteing kept Decarnin's feel but applied his own touch by refining the over all look.

Berluti

The Rise of the Phoenix I call this one - So incredibly sharp, so incredibly assured and so incredibly confident that I imagine it would be befitting for a man in his late 40's to be donning these phenomenal looks. He's been through all his style stages, experimented with different looks and now he is cemented in the ultimate perfection.

Diesel Black Gold

I call this one the artiste - the cause of my demise. A rebel, a nomad and a free soul, he doesn't play by anyones rules but his own hence the attire showcased so brilliantly depicting his persona in this collection.

Dries Van Noten

This collection screams British Rock Band to me because in all honestly they can pull of fashion and style like truly no one other does. Streamlined with ease and not shy with prints - not anyone can pull this off but if you do, hats off to you - i'd like to get to know you.

Dsquared²

If you're a jeans kind of guy then this collection is right up your ally - not so casual but at the same time not so refined. A wardrobe with spunk catered to the guys out there that refuse to shy away from their good old faithful denim.

Iceberg

The rebel that does whatever he wants, gets away with it and looks damn good doing it too. He wont abide by society and marches to his own beat and judging by his attire he's an artist of some sort. The collection is not messy and hobo-like but creative yet refined its own very way.

About two years ago Idiscovered the local blog The Oniomaniac (which is the psychological term for ashopaholic), and ever since I’ve been completely hooked. Written by the anonymous Miss G, the Gis short is for Ghesquière as in Nicholas Ghesquière, is afashion obsessed college student with an impressive shopping addiction. What makes her blog so unique is herwide and particular knowledge of anything fashion related, her coverage of herown impeccable personal style, and her sharp sense of humor. The Oniomaniac covers everything fromwhat Shakieha Moza of Qatar is wearing, to Miss G’s latest lipstick choice, and recently a look into her fashionable friends closets. Luckily enough I got to interview themysterious Miss G to get a little insight on what goes through her head and howshe feeds her oniomania.

When did youstart your blog and why did you decide to start blogging about fashion?

Istarted blogging literally because my family told me to shut up about fashionor else. Who are yourfashion icons?

I don’t dress like anyone because what you like is the only thing that suits you. I believe that firmly. But. I have made no secret that I am completely crazy crazy crazy for hyper-glamouristas Sheikha Moza of Qatar and Lady Lee Pheungboonpra of Thailand. They epitomize that over the top, awesomely bejeweled, hyper-groomed, vividly colored super-luxe aesthetic that only a woman with experience, age and supreme confidence can carry off. Their style is bold, fabulous and life-loving! Makes you feel alive! Also unmissable is my not-so-mild case of stalkerazzing Claire Courtin-Clarins (CCC on my blog). There is something about her that just drives me nuts. She is so blonde and pale that I feel as if she has been bleached and it’s amazing! Her style is uniquely her own. I hate gimmicky styles, where people feel they need to define themselves by one component of their appearance (I ONLY carry a Chanel 2.55, even to the gym! I HAVE to wear Mac Rubywoo, it’s my thing you don’t understand! Louboutins are my life!). BO-RING

Clairealways looks like CCC but sans gimmick. The way she puts brights and sheers andhappy prints together and her minute attention to detail and proportion reallyjust makes my day. Although I shop literallyeverywhere I go, I have to say London. One beacuse I am Khaleeji (from the Arabian Gulf), two because I was born there, and threebecause it’s the only city which comes up with things I obsess over on a regularbasis.

London, unlike othercities, has a sense of humor. I love stupid things and funny things and I amtotally willing to walk into a shop and purchase them and love them. London isthe only place where I could walk up to Ganton street and buy some black widowand AK-47 necklaces in silver and two steps later try on a deconstructed CareBear-spangled schoolgirl skirt by a fresh Central Saint Martins graduate atBeyond the Valley, then hop on the tube to Bank and score a bubblegum pink fauxfur-trimmed princess coat at a Chinese stall at Spitalfields. What’s not tolove? No one is disdainfully telling me they don’t have my size (thank youParis) and people are so much cooler than in any other city. In Paris there isa Paris Look (Zadig and Voltaire, IRO, Maje, Kooples, Balmain-mania, Moncler,dark dark boring), in New York there is a New York Look (currently hautehipster, heavy on the AA, super-niche t-shirt brands, the Row, Wang,“statement” this and that.), everyone conforms to the city’s aesthetic. I’m always on the lookoutfor exhibitions like vintage fairs in Kensington or antiquarian book fairs atOlympia. Those are where you find the coolest things because it’s collects allthe sellers and enthusiasts in one place.

Spitalfields marketvendors are always worth checking out.

InKuwait (since the sad demise of my true love Villa Moda); I have to say it’s acombination of Boutique 4 for their avante garde , Al Othman for their Erdemand David Szeto etc, and Spring Flows for thrifty 80s hauls.

Do you ever getdisenchanted by the fashion world and do you have any dislikes about theindustry?

Idon’t work in the fashion industry but in my opinion the fashion world producesmore beautiful things than any other so I mostly love fashion and crazy fashionpeople. What I dislike in magazines and in the blogosphere is the excessivecommodification of the love of fashion. When it becomes all about the Birkinand all about looking “cute” instead of realizing an aesthetic you love andcherish, then I’m immensely bored. Loving fashion is not about worshippingstatus; I don’t respect that.

Golden Globes 2012 Red Carpet: Worst Dressed

I'm sad to say the people I anticipated the most ended up disappointing me at last night's Golden Globes. I was sure Rooney Mara was going to kill it, and Zooey Deschanel was going to be her usual cute quirky self. Unfortunately, that did not happen. Here are last night's worst dressed list. How bland does Freida Pinto look in this Prada dress?

Mila Kunis in Dior

My favorite new leading man, Michael Fassbender, looks horrible in this shiny suit.

I really hate the fit and fabric of this Zac Posen dress on Reese Witherspoon, and I can't stand how her hair looks. With that neckline she should have had hair up and wore a statement necklace or earrings.

Rooney Mara, who usually looks great on the red carpet, ruined her stylish streak in a horrible Nina Ricci gown. I was hoping she wore something more fashion forward, such as this Antonio Berardi dress.

Jessica Biel has one of the most amazing bodies but looks quite frumpy in Elie Saab Haute Couture. Maybe next time she'll wear one of these more flattering Oscar de la Renta pre-fall gowns.

Oh how I was hoping that Zooey would wear her favorite trademark silhouette, the short full skirt. She would have looked amazing in one of these Giles or Honor Pre-Fall dresses. Instead she opted for a Prada gown and a very unflattering hairdo.

Golden Globes 2012 Red Carpet: The Okay List

Some actresses looked okay at last night's 69th Annual Golden Globes, and in that, I mean their dresses are good in theory but did not translate well on the red carpet. Stay tuned for the worst dressed list.

Lea Michele doesn't look very confident in this Marchesa dress. Don't get me wrong the dress is beautiful, but it doesn't suit her and I wish she did something different with her hair.

This Gucci gown washes out Jessica Alba, I wish she wore something brighter like this Christian Siriano SS2012 gown.

I honestly think Natalie Portman knows how beautiful she is, and that is why she doesn't try with her red carpet gowns. I find this Lanvin gown quite boring. I would have loved to see her in this Chanel Pre-Fall dress.

Sarah Hyland is trying to look older in this vintage Dolce & Gabbana gown.

Shailene Woodly is unfortunately too washed out in a beautiful Marchesa gown.

Another star who is washed out by their dress, and this time it's Nicole Kidman in Versace. I would have absolutely loved to see her in this black Jason Wu Pre-Fall dress. I think it would have looked stunning against her pale skin.

I was pleasantly surprised by what some of the starlets chose to wear on the red carpet last night at the 69th Annual Golden Globes. I usually have no more then five favorites in these Hollywood events, but I was impressed by 10 women from last night. The silhouette of the evening was mermaid, and the color of the evening was dark blue. Here are my favorites, and stay tuned for my okay and worst dressed lists later today. Diana Agron in this beautiful laser cut red Giles dress is definitely my favorite look of the night. Here is someone choosing to be fashion forward, without being completely over the top. I loved her hairdo and matching red lips.

I loved how Jessica Chastain's figure looks in this Givenchy Haute Couture dress and how the color of the dress complements her red hair.

Wearing prints head to toe, either it be the same print or mixing it up, is a big trend in womenswear for spring 2012. However, I noticed a lot of men adopting this trend off the runway at Pitti Uomo and Milan Fall 2012 shows. These stylish men seem to be mixing different prints and textures in their outfits, and it's actually very charming.

Al Moda is Two: H's Favorite Posts

It's been two years since Al Moda launched, and it feels like it was just yesterday. Just as Al Moda's first year, the past year I was able to cover some interesting things from the fashion world. Here are some of my favorite posts from the year, and I'm looking forward to what our third year has to offer!

The Interview:
Last February I got to interview the talented accessories designer Sophia Edstrand of Sophia 203. I'm a huge fan of her accessories and it's always exciting to see her expand her brand into new directions (she recently launched both a bridal collection and a children's collection).

The Review:

Just before his fall, Galliano showed a beautiful Couture collection for Spring 2011 inspired by René Gruau and Dior's New look.

The Model of the Moment:

Ruby Aldridge, at the moment, is the model with right amount of rock&roll cool. She can wear both cutoff shorts and concerts tees off the runway, and high fashion on the runway with such ease.

The Styling Project:

Al Moda got asked to work on a very exciting project by assisting Nur Kaoukji styling the Mata Hari lookbook for noon. It was a really fun day and a great project to work on.

Sweet Birds of Youth: The Fanning Sisters

The Fanning sisters, Elle and Dakota, have been everywhere from the December cover of W to Vogue's best dressed list. Recently Elle, the more fashionable of the two in my opinion, modeled Rodarte's spring couture collection for A Magazine curated by Rodarte. Elle shot by Bill Owens looks beautiful in the sweet Rodarte creations. While the older of the two sisters, Dakota, looks all grown up on the cover of the latest Elle UK. Dakota wore the ladylike trend of Spring 2012 perfectly without loosing her youthfulness. The shoot was perfectly styled by Anne-Marie Curtis and shot by David Slijper.

Uber Cool: Opening Ceremony Pre-Fall 2012

Opening Ceremony's first ever pre-fall collection does not stray away from its signature cool formula. Each year the store dedicates the sale floor to a specific country and this year it happens to be Argentina, and the latest collection is inspired by the country. All the cute mini dresses and skirts can be found, but in darker rich colors and prints. I'm absolutely loving the leather jackets and vests, specifically the orange one.

And here's a sneak peak at the sultan of cool or Chloë Sevigny's closet, I'm completely envious.

I recently discovered, while reading the latest British Vogue, that Sophia Kokosalaki has launched a new diffusion line for Asos. The line is called Kore (it means maiden and daughter in Greek) is part of an Asos program to help designers develop other revenue streams. Being a huge fan of the designer's modern Grecian creations, I'm quite excited about this collection because all the pieces are below 420 British Pounds. Kokosalaki was inspired by traditional lace makers in Sri Lanka while there on vacation. She told Vogue "I love handmade pieces, but they have always been so expensive", and "this a way of doing fast fashion in a slow way". This is great news for any Kokosalaki fan on a budget.

Al Moda was recently asked by Nur Kaoukji, the creative director of noon, to assist in styling the Mata Hari photo-shoot. I have to say it was a great experience working with Nur, Alferd Tarazi the photographer, and Hind Al-Awadi and Saud Al-Khateib of The Dusty Co (they shot a teaser video for the shoot). On the day of the shoot I got to take some behind the scene photos, but stay tuned for the video from The Dusty Co and the actual lookbook coming soon!

Wardrobe Envy: Rooney Mara

Rooney Mara, the star of the new Hollywood The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, has been killing it on the red carpet lately. I took notice of her sartorial choices last month when she wore a beautiful Calvin Klein slip dress at the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Awards. Since Mara played the tough Lisbeth Salandar she's been looking quite goth, and I'm quite loving the dark hair and lips against her pale skin. Whoever her stylist is, she or he is doing a great job.

Perfect Holiday Dressing: Temperley Pre-Fall 2012

Temperley's Pre-Fall 2012 collection is the perfect inspiration for the holiday season. The collection is filled with pieces in lace, sequins, and velvet that would be fit for a Christmas or New Year's eve party. What made it more season appropriate is the impeccable styling: the sparkly headbands, the gloves, the polka dot tights, and the perfect red lip. Luckily enough stores are filled with pieces that would make the perfect, Temperley like, holiday outfit.

Burnt Orange: Pre-Fall 2012

Number 8 by Mark Rothko

Burnt orange is the perfect color for cold weather; it has this deep intensity and goes perfectly with neutrals. It reminds me of fall foliage, and I was happy to see it in some Pre-Fall shows. Both Calvin Klein and Thakoon Addition gave me the inspiration to add the perfect pop of color to my winter outfits.

Zac Posen is one of the designers, if not THE designer that comes to mind when I think of "lady like silhouettes" or creating designs that not only flatter but enhance the female figure.

The fabrics, cut and colors chosen are all ingredients in Posen's little bag of tricks that make me lusting for more season after season.

Pre-Fall 2012 is already out and for some reason I'm not really impressed with most collections. I have to say though the Jason Wu collection was quite spot on, however, Jenni Kayne tickled my fancy in just the right way and delivered like no other designer did.

It is the perfect culmination of nonchalant elegance and downtown vs uptown chic - I need to have this collection.

Jason Wu's uptown girl gone bad seems to be a theme with the designer. His critically acclaimed Spring 2012 girl is a park avenue princess with an edge, and this edginess can be seen in his latest collection. For Pre-Fall Wu inspirations were Charley Harper's prints which can be seen in the patterns, and Indian Mahrajas which can be seen in the color palette. I absolutely loved the hair and makeup, especially those playful headpieces.

The blonde and the brunette, the serbian and the persian or just a very dear friend of mine and a dear friend of hers. This perfect duo, Andrea Rajacic and Tala Yasseri, have taken the New York scene by storm! They both currently reside in New York and a while back started a full service event production and creative planning agency, The New York Issue. What makes them different you may ask? Well, they focus on an innovative and customized approach while creating and executing events specially catered to the client. What does that mean? Wait for it.

While these girls are certainly pretty to look at and have an enviable wardrobe - they're pretty much setting themselves apart from the rest in NY by offering several services under one roof such as organizing events like store openings, art exhibitions, fashion shows and after parties, event services such as custom invitations, menus and place cards, design, production and installations and rendering and floor plans and finally, PR services such as guest list development & management, check-in staffing & door list oversight and seating layout and assignment.

The reason they are pioneers in what they do? They're newcomers to the game yet managed to be hired by the giants in the industry.

Their last three events include: The Christian Louboutin FNO store event on September 8th in NY, the Lovecat Magazine issue #2 launch party at Le Bain in the Standard hosted by Lindsay Lohan on September 15th and the Lovecat Magazine Halloween dinner hosted by Jessica White at the Waldorf Astoria on October 31st.

How did you get into fashion, and when in your life did you start to get interested into it?

Andrea: I was always an avid appreciator of living in the Middle East, Europe and America. I took from each the different meanings and forms of beauty and how it is valued. However, I initially got into the fashion industry by working for designer Brian Reyes and then Milk Studios here in NYC with Tala.

Tala: I don't consider myself solely in fashion. A big part of our network is in the fashion industry therefore naturally we have had a lot of fashion clients.

Who are your fashion icons?

A: Catherine Baba because I love the way she doesn’t reserve glamour for special occasions only, Emanuelle Alt because her laid back rock & roll look is effortless & no one wears a blazer and skinny jeans better than she does and Grace Kelly because she truly was the classic beauty.

T: Isabella Blow, Lea T and Audrey Hepburn

How do you define your style?

A: It really depends on my mood. My everyday style is a balance of comfortable, professional and creative.

T: I tend to stick more to the basics, I love a great simple slouchy t-shirt and layering. Im pretty much always dressed in black but I always top it off with statement rings.

What's your favorite city for shopping, and why?

A: New York. I live in SoHo and walking down the street everyday is a huge inspiration – you see people who are daring with their personal style and are not slaves to trends. Whatever your taste is you won’t fail in finding a shop to satisfy it, NY has everything.

T: I love Corso Como in Milan but if I had to pick a city I would say London, I find people very daring with their style.

What's your favorite city for its lifestyle aesthetic?

A: Belgrade/Sarajevo. People there might not have a lot of money, but they know how to enjoy life, how to laugh and how to make the most of what they have. Despite the hardships that the region has experienced, the people have a sense of humor unparalleled anywhere else. There is definitely more of an appreciation for creating experiences and memories than working yourself mad to attain material things that don’t necessarily increase the quality of life. I absolutely admire that.

T: Buenos Aires, because you see the incredible blend of cultures but its still incredibly modern.

What's your favorite shopping destination in New York?

A: Kirna Zabete for their wonderfully eccentric designer clothes and selection of accessories. I’m also obsessed with two others: a furniture shop in NoHo called ‘Craig Van de Brulle’ – its stocked with gorgeous glass art deco chandeliers and handpicked pieces by the likes of Gio Ponti and Paul Evans. The other is a bookshop in SoHo called ‘Clic’ – it has fabulous coffee table books about art, fashion, photography and architecture.

T: Barneys

Did you always want to work in fashion, how do you feel about it, and what's the most exciting thing about your job?

A: I think a lot of girls dream of working in fashion, but for me it was more about having the chance to work with luxury products/services. Having an events & pr company allows me to function within different industries, spending my time with people in various professions and working with a wide range of products and services. I find that this satisfies my relentless curiosity, which is great because I need to be challenged.

T: I always wanted to work in a creative field as I was highly influenced by my mother's work as an interior designer. What I love most about my job is the ability to witness the evolution of an idea from its beginning stages to its full production.

Do you ever get disenchanted with the industry, and do you have any dislikes about the industry?

A: I’d rather not focus on the negative in any area of my life. I’m sure that I could find things to be unhappy with, but I’d rather concentrate on what counts. It is hard to feel disenchanted when you’re constantly dipping your toes into new territory and working in a new environment – it’s actually exhilarating.

T: Like any other industry it has its challenges, its what you make of it.

What is your favorite collection from the SS12 season?

Accessory actually! A black box calf flap bag from Céline. Small, simple and it ages well.

When she passed away, my great aunt gave me a pair of square shaped earrings covered in small diamonds – they are in a vintage dark gold setting so the stones really stand out.

My Isabel Marant Manly fringe boots in a brick color. Comfortable, fun to wear and the color is unexpected.

Objects of Desire: DAI Treasury of the World

Usually my objects of desire are an expensive pair of shoes, a fabulous handbag, and or a great outfit that can be attained at some point. However, today's objects of desire are impossible to have because they, literally, belong in a museum. Two days ago I was invited by Dar al-Athar al-Islamiyah, at the Amiricani Cultural Center, to view The al-Sabah's collection of "Treasury of the World - Jeweled Arts of India in the Age of Mugahals". The exhibition features more than 500 objects of Mughal jewelry and it has exhibited all over the world in the past 10 years. I have to say some of the objects displayed are quite breathtaking. Here are few of the pieces that I loved, and I'm sorry for the low quality pictures as they were taken by phone's camera because I thought no cameras were allowed. Wouldn't it be lovely to be some Maharani in Mughal India?

Wearing leather is exciting, especially if you are wearing it as a dress or a skirt. It adds a much needed edge and texture to an outfit. Model of the Moment: Ruby Aldridge

Every once and a while a new model shows up and takes me by surprise, and right now it's Ruby Aldridge. She is one of those models who has that rock and roll attitude (she's recently been linked to The Strokes guitarist Albert Hammond Jr), but still has quite a versatile look. The 20 year old comes from a modeling dynstay; her sister is none other than Victoria Secret angle Lily Aldridge and her mother is former Playmate Laura Lyons. This past Spring 2012 season, Ruby graced major runway shows from New York to Milan. With her deep set eyes, pouty lips, long limbs, and cool style it's hard not to take notice.

Tom Ford Spring 2012

Tom Ford's Spring 2012 collection finally made its debut to the public this weekend on Vogue. The collection was originally shown semi-privately in September in London, with strict instructions of no photography or tweeting about the collection. He wanted to debut the collection to the public closer to the date of its arrival in stores, which kind of makes sense so people do not get sick of it. The collection has 36 looks and personally I think the collection is quite lacking, but it is classic Tom Ford. The sheer dresses with the embroidery are my favorite, and I can't wait to see them on the red carpet or worn by some fashionista next fashion week.

Set is a German based label that got inspired by the Rock movement of the 70's and uses elements such as distressed denim, suede, leather and lightweight knits for the SS12 collection. Kasia Struss and Bambi Northwood-blyth did such a fantastic job at portraying the look and feel into the lookbook that I just find myself yearning for the whole collection.

The new trailer of Snow White and the Huntsman came out recently, and all I can think about while watching it is how gorgeous Charlize Theron looks as the wicked witch. Kristen Stewart is playing Snow White, who is supposed to be the fairest of them all, has nothing on Charlize. Vogue has chose Theron to grace their cover for their December issue, since she is also staring in Young Adult which is coming out this month. All I have to say is she looks like an amazing sea goddess in the Annie Leibovitz photographed editorial.

Lady Gaga has been spotted around London donning pieces fresh of the SS12 runway - and let me tell you, what a breath of fresh air! She's still making a statement (lemon yellow Osman dress, SO the color of next season) actually all the colors she's rocking are fresh as are the garments themselves! No longer just a walking act, but a fashionable one at that. Utterly and completely refreshing I say.

Seen twice around London in Osman SS12 and other Osman pieces that I would like to see her in.

Out and about in London donning Roksanda Ilincic SS12 and pieces from the collection that she would absolutely look ravishing in - goodbye to the fashionably outrageous and hello to the fashionably famous.

Last night the eighth annual CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards announced its winner, and Joseph Altuzarra had the honor of winning 300,000 US dollars and a mentorship for one year. Jewelry designer Pamela Love, and Shane Gabier and Christopher Peters of the Chicago based Creatures of the Wind received 100,000 dollars (for each brand) as runner ups. Fall Bridal 2012: An Insider Look With May Mukhaimer

Fall 2012 Bridal Fashion Week took place last month and to get an insider's look into bridal-wear I sat down with May Mukhaimer, bridal buyer at Al Othman, at their new bridal boutique. May was in New York last month for Al Othman Bridal's buying trip and got to see all the beautiful collections up close. From my short interview, I learned that trends in bridal design are not as obvious as in ready to wear because the emphasis is placed on how unique a dress is. At times Al Othman would request pieces from previous collections that they might see as more fitting for their clients than current collections. With a wedding dress, it is critical to get what the bride wishes for and not what the industry dictates.

What excites you the most about your job?

I enjoy being around the dresses, and the experience of being part of a client’s search for the perfect dress for a very special day.

What do you look for in your buying trips?

I try to look for unique pieces that stand out; whether in some intricate detail, an exaggerated train, ruffles, or elaborate beading. Sometimes the collections do not offer dresses that are suitable for the Kuwaiti market. Al Othman will often ask designers to customize the dress with detailed beading, floral embroidery, elongating a train, altering a neckline, or adding sleeves.

Do you pick white or ivory dresses from the ready to wear collections for the bridal boutique?

I tend to steer away from that because of how small the market is. Al Othman did choose a dress from Marchesa’s Spring 2011 collection because it was very fitting for a wedding dress. Bridal collections come before the ready to wear collections and it’s better that way, because if it were the other way around it would be a disaster. This way the bride always has the first choice. Oscar de la Renta and Monique Lhuillier are at times inspired by their ready to wear collections for their bridal collections, and create some pieces in ivory and white.

What were the trends that you saw in your latest buying trip (Fall 2012)?

There isn't a common theme, it’s different from ready to wear, but some designers have used floral detail especially fabricated flowers. Vera Wang has the witchcraft theme which shocked me; she used a black and nude palette (they actually got some pieces for Al Othman). There are some really interesting dresses, but it is hard for me to imagine them in ivory. My personal favorites from the season are a Marchesa mermaid dress with grayish floral embroidery and the beige Vera Wang dress with an exaggerated train. We (AlOthman) ordered some gowns from Monique Lhuillier, Oscar de la Renta, and Vera Wang that will be customized to make the dresses a little bit more special for the Kuwaiti bride.

Do you keep your eye out for new bridal designers?

We do keep an eye on designers that are moving to bridal, but sometimes not everyone suits our cliental. I'm excited to say that we are getting Mohammed Ashi's bridal collection in store soon.

Who are your favorite celebrity brides?

I loved Kim Kardashian’s second dress for her wedding, and the way Jennifer Aniston looked in her veil.
